Butters' Rhythm Adventure

Xiara Smith

Butters' Rhythm Adventure is a tabletop arcade game I designed and built to bring together coding, physical design, and playful interaction.
I have always been drawn to games that feel expressive and alive, so I wanted to create something that was not just on a screen, but existed as a physical object you can sit down with. The cabinet is small and approachable, inspired by retro arcade machines but reimagined with a softer and more personal aesthetic.
The game itself is a rhythm based experience where players respond to visual prompts and timing. I built it using p5.js, focusing on how movement, feedback, and pacing shape the way a player feels while interacting with it. I wanted it to be simple to understand but still engaging.
A big part of this project was personal. I wanted to immortalize my rabbit, Butters, through the character and the world of the game. The visual style, color choices, and animations all reflect that intention. I wanted the experience to feel warm, inviting, and connected to something real in my life.
This project explores how digital gameplay can feel more meaningful when it is paired with a physical form and a personal story.
